Timeless Values of a Knightly Order

An order of chivalry in England, often called a chivalric order or knightly order - is a structured Christian community dedicated to faith, charitable service, and noble values. What began centuries ago with the care of sick and wounded warriors continues today through a legacy of compassion, spiritual duty, and community support throughout England and the Christian Church.

Our modern knightly order is guided by integrity, honesty, and compassion. We believe the most meaningful battles are fought within hearts and minds, inspiring positive change and shaping a more just and hopeful society. In a complex modern world, the timeless virtues of chivalry - mercy, humility, courage, and service - remain powerful tools for addressing inequality and strengthening our communities.

A Modern Order of Knights in the UK

As a modern chivalric order in England, we actively support charitable initiatives that improve lives and uplift communities. We continue the noble traditions of English chivalry while adapting them to the needs of today.

The Hospitallers of Saint Thomas of Canterbury draw inspiration from the medieval knightly order. Although not a direct continuation, we uphold and embody the values of the English Crusaders — bravery, charity, and faithful service. Our mission as a Christian chivalric order is to honour their legacy by living out the spirit of knighthood in our modern activities.

A Chivalric Order Inspired by the Past

Inspired by the medieval order founded in 1191 at Acre, we blend ancient ideals of knighthood with modern practices. Our focus is to preserve the authentic heritage of the Hospitallers of Saint Thomas of Canterbury at Acre and the legacy of Saint Thomas Becket, the revered martyr of Canterbury. As our spiritual protector, Saint Thomas guides our commitment to service and supports our mission to embody the noble virtues of historic knights in everyday life.

Honouring Our Knights and Dames

Our British order of chivalry places strong emphasis on active participation. Advancement through the ranks is earned through dedication, service, and commitment to our ideals. Promotions are reviewed by the Command Council to uphold the highest standards of honour.

Members may also receive decorations and medals for exceptional service or notable achievements. These honours celebrate individual excellence and inspire others to follow the noble path of chivalric virtue.

Order of Knighthood – Ranks and Insignia

Our order of knighthood follows a traditional hierarchical structure inspired by European chivalric customs. Ranks and decorations acknowledge service, commitment, and accomplishments within our knightly order.

Each rank features distinctive insignia based on the historical coat of arms of the medieval order. The emblem is worn on a red–cream–red ribbon, offering a symbolic link to our ancient heritage.

All ranks wear a mantle, white for knights and dames, black for sergeants, featuring a red cross and white scallop shell. Members also wear a dark suit with a personalized order tie or scarf during religious and ceremonial engagements.

Our Spiritual Patron

Saint Thomas Becket (1119/1120–1170), Archbishop of Canterbury, remains a powerful symbol of courage, conscience, and the independence of the Church. His stand against royal interference and his martyrdom on 29 December 1170 inspired Christians across Europe and led to his canonization in 1173.

Despite the destruction of his shrine during the Reformation, Becket’s legacy endures. Honoured on 29 December, he symbolizes moral strength, religious freedom, and steadfast faith, values that guide the Hospitallers of Saint Thomas of Canterbury today.
